Coach Mai Đức Chung confirms that the 2026 Asian Cup will be his final tournament with the Vietnam Women's National Team.
After the match against the Japan Women's National Team at the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026, Coach Mai Đức Chung attended a press conference and candidly shared insights about the match and the future direction of Vietnamese women's football.
Regarding his future after the tournament, Coach Mai Đức Chung stated that he plans to step down after completing his duties, allowing opportunities for the next generation. “After this tournament, I will also step down. I am very pleased that someone will soon take over to continue leading the Vietnam Women's National Team.”
The Vietnam Women's National Team could not overcome the narrow gap, suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan, thus stopping at the group stage of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and also losing hope of qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup Finals. This is a sad ending for both Coach Mai Đức Chung and the golden generation of the Vietnam Women's National Team.
At the press conference, Coach Mai Đức Chung also expressed gratitude to the host country and the Vietnamese community who accompanied the team throughout the tournament.
“On behalf of the Vietnam Women's National Football Team, I sincerely thank the fans and the people of Australia for warmly welcoming us during our time competing here. Especially, thank you to the Vietnamese expatriates and Vietnamese people in Australia who always came to the stadium to support the team in the recent matches. That has been a great encouragement for us.”
Additionally, he emphasized that for Vietnamese women's football to continue developing, greater attention must be paid to youth training and grassroots development. “We must continue to work and strive harder, particularly in developing youth football. It is necessary to strengthen football in schools, training centers, and local communities. When the grassroots movement becomes stronger, the national team's performance can improve.”
