Southeast Asian fans stirred up as Vietnam's team eliminated from Asian Cup, loses World Cup ticket

The loss to Japan marked the end of Vietnam women's team's path in the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, sparking widespread responses among Southeast Asian supporters.

The final group stage match of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup saw Vietnam women's national team face a formidable challenge named Japan. Against this top-tier continental opponent, the players defended diligently but still suffered a 0-4 defeat. This result prevented Vietnam women's team from advancing among the best-performing third-place teams and officially halted their progress at the group stage.

From the opening minutes, Vietnam women's team opted for a deep defensive approach to mitigate pressure from the opponent. However, confronted with Japan's speed and technical play, goalkeeper Khong Thi Hang's goal was repeatedly under threat. In the 21st minute, Riko Ueki headed in a close-range opener, followed by three more goals in the second half from Maika Hamano, Aoba Fujino, and Kiko Seike.

This defeat meant Vietnam women's team lost the chance to compete for a World Cup ticket via the 2026 Women's Asian Cup. Nevertheless, many Southeast Asian fans still offered encouragement to the regional representative, acknowledging the superiority of Japan women's national team—one of the major forces in Asian women's football.

A fan from the region commented: "It's unfortunate for Vietnam because losing to Taiwan in the previous match put them in a very tough position. Today's loss is understandable as Japan is simply too strong." This assessment garnered considerable agreement as Japan dominated the match almost entirely and maintained constant pressure throughout the 90 minutes.

Other opinions focused on the overall situation in Southeast Asia."So Southeast Asia now only has Philippines with a chance to compete for a World Cup spot. Good luck to Vietnam next time." Meanwhile, some reiterated the skill gap between the two women's football programs, stating: "Vietnam women's team has participated in the World Cup before, yet they had no chance against Japan—it's truly daunting!"

Beyond technical analysis, many fans expressed respect for the fighting spirit of Vietnam women's team and the supporters in the stands."On the field, I could still hear Vietnamese fans cheering for their team despite the heavy deficit. That's truly admirable!" Another opinion also affirmed: "Japan is too powerful; Vietnam gave their utmost effort."

Despite an early exit, Vietnam women's team's performance received recognition from many regional supporters. Against a top-class opponent like Japan, defeat was inevitable, but the combat spirit and fervent support from spectators continue to highlight the respected stature of Vietnamese women's football in Southeast Asia.
